Colour Briefs® Lee Matasi Gallery 2018
By laboriously painting my American Apparel® underwear in all the colours, I am commenting on labour and highlight the complexities that arise from the production of a basic garment, worn by everyone regardless of class. Repeating the motif in a range of sizes and mediums is designed to draw parallels to the art world and critique the excessive commodification of art in the twenty-first century. Because Colour Briefs® is laboriously produced, I challenge viewers to consider questions like why we still paint and whether these same values could be extended to other facets of our lives.

At the heart of Colour Briefs® is an installation of eighteen 9 x 12 oil paintings exhibited in clear plastic bags. The paintings are displayed on three white shelves and stored in a filing cabinet with a labeled file folder for each colour. The collected work functions as an art installation, colour reference library and sales catalogue all in one.
